Oral Pathology

Changes in the tissues of the mouth are often harmless, but some deserve a closer look. Because oral abnormalities can develop without causing significant discomfort, a professional evaluation is important when something unusual does not go away.

Our oral surgeon can examine changes involving the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof of the mouth, jaw, face, or neck and determine whether additional testing or treatment may be appropriate.

Changes That Should Be Evaluated

Contact our office if you notice:

  • A red, white, or unusually discolored area inside the mouth
  • A sore that remains present or repeatedly bleeds
  • A new lump, swelling, or area of thickened tissue
  • Ongoing hoarseness or throat irritation
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

Not every unusual area is a sign of a serious condition. However, persistent changes should not be ignored simply because they are painless. Some oral conditions, including oral cancer, may cause few noticeable symptoms in their early stages.

When Something Does Not Feel or Look Right

You know what is normal for your mouth. Paying attention to new or lasting changes can help identify problems that may need professional attention.

If you have noticed a sore, lump, discoloration, unexplained oral or facial discomfort, or another concern that has not resolved, schedule an evaluation with our office. We can examine the area, explain what we find, and discuss whether any additional steps are needed.
